Assessment Methods

Assessment is usually via a combination of exams and coursework, and sometimes by a portfolio of work, depending on the subject. A final year project gives you the chance to work independently and contributes considerably to your final mark. Your tutors will give prompt and constructive feedback via our virtual learning environment, face-to-face or as written comments. This will help you to identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to put in more work.

Each Module of BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering programm is assessed with approximately 60% of the assessments via coursework submission, and 40% by examination. However, this percentage may vary for different modules.

To be eligible for the degree, you must:

  • Age 17+ by 30 November in the year of registration.
  • 112 UCAS Points at A’ Level with minimum grade C in Mathematics and one of the following subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Further Maths, Engineering)
  • or
    BTEC Award (provided grade DMM or above is achieved) in an Engineering discipline with a distinction grade in the Further Mathematics unit.
    or
    HSSC - Intermediate / Higher Secondary Certificate: entry to level 4 requires a 75% overall award mark; mathematics passed at 70% or above in final year, passes in physics and chemistry.
    or
    Any other relevant high school qualifications
  • Provide proof of competence in English and Mathematics by having UK GCSE/GCE ‘O’ level at grade C. Otherwise a test of proficiency may be required.
  • Each application will be considered on an individual basis, and the decision will be taken at the discretion of the Liverpool John Moores University.

BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering is accredited by Institution of Mechanical Engineers. This accreditation means your degree is a stepping stone towards registration as a Chartered Engineer.

Engineering Graduates can also go on to undertake further professional qualifications including;
  • Masters in Engineering (MEng) Mechanical Engineering
  • Masters in Engineering Management
  • Masters in Engineering with Specialization in: (Materials, Mechanics, Mechanics etc.)
Accredited MEng degrees enable graduates to gain CEng status without further study.
