BA (Hons) International Relations and Politics- An Overview

This innovative degree will provide a grounding in international relations theory while examining in-depth issues of enduring international significance. In examining the challenges, the world faces today, we will encourage you to develop your own opinions and actively engage in politics.
The degree takes an expanded definition of what is International Relations and covers a range of subjects from economics, politics, law and culture to examining the actions of international organizations, nation-states and non-state actors. It provides you with an essential grounding in international relations theory and a range of specialist modules, which examine in-depth issues of enduring international significance, such as conflict, state-building, and the role of multilateral organizations.

Programme Structure

You study 18 courses over a period of three years to earn the BA (Hons) International Relations and Politics degree.

Level - 4

Six mandatory modules (20 credit each):

  • Introduction to International Relations and Politics
  • Understanding the theories behind politics
  • Comparative Politics
  • Researching International Relations and Politics
  • Being Politically Engaged
  • International History and State Formation

Level - 5

Six mandatory modules (20 credit each):

  • Debating international relations theory
  • Research paper in international relations
  • International Politics at the Regional Level
  • Politics and Popular Culture
  • International Organisations
  • Colonial Africa, 1880-1994
  • A Bitter Resurgence: China into the Modern World (1894-1992)

Level - 6

Six Optional modules (20 credit each)

  • Research Project in International Relations and Politics - 40 Credit
  • Public International Law - 20
  • The International Politics of Development – 20 Credits
  • US Democracy Promotion in the Contemporary era – 20 Credits
  • The Politics of War an Organized Violence- 20 Credits
  • The United Nations and International Security – 20 Credits
  • The Politics of Health – 20 credits

Assessment

Each Module of BA (Hons) International Relations and Politics programme is assessed using a mix of coursework methods. Assessment is based on 100% coursework. ​The aim in all the assessments is to test your understanding of international relations and politics. We all learn in different ways, and our assessments are a mixture of essays, essay plans, presentations and research project.

To be eligible for the degree, you must:

  • Age 17+ by 30 November in the year of registration.
  • A levels with 112 UCAS points from a minimum of 2 A Levels. Maximum of 20 AS points accepted
    or
    International Baccalaureate: 26 IB points.
    or
    HSSC Intermediate / Higher Secondary Certificate: requires a 75% overall award mark
    or
    BTEC National Diploma: DMM in a relevant subject area is required if no other level 3 qualifications are Taken.

    Other
  • Provide proof of competence in English by having UK GCSE/GCE ‘O’ level at grade C. Otherwise a test of proficiency may be required.
  • Each application will be considered on an individual basis, and the decision will be taken at the discretion of the Liverpool John Moores University.
