Completing the professionally-accredited BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Liverpool John Moores University will enable you to graduate with a degree-level qualification plus advanced level engineering skills. Additionally studying for Electrical and Electronics Engineering with LJMU will allow you to benefit from:

  • Excellent student support from UK academic tutors and student mentors
  • Design-led engineering curriculum emphasis, with design projects supplied by industrial partners
  • Well-equipped laboratories and workshops with state-of-the-art software and excellent technical support
  • Programme Accreditation by the Institution of Engineering and Technology
  • Regular contributions from professional engineers and industrial visits

This programme offers an invaluable opportunity to enhance your skills and provide a taste of what it’s really like to work in the industry. It will also give you a head start when you come to negotiate your way around the competitive job market.

Programme Structure, Course Catalogue and Specifications

Electrical and electronic engineers are involved in the ongoing development and production of a diverse range of products, and so companies supplying anything from bread to jet engines, from mobile phones to banking services will need their skills.

Level 4 of this BEng (Hons) course covers core engineering principles and technologies such as mathematics, electrical engineering, electronics and instrumentation, microprocessors and programming. You will also spend time completing structured design projects, which will help develop your engineering and management skills. In the second year there is greater emphasis on the application of the core principles through design.

Electronics and microprocessors are taught in the context of designing and controlling engineering systems and the mathematics course provides the essential skills to enable you to design control strategies, and supports the more mathematical modules of the programme.

The fourth year of the programme covers the core themes of electronics, electrical power and management and you will undertake a major individual project with an academic supervisor. During your course, you will undertake projects that are both structured and less structured allowing you more freedom to design your own solutions to problems.

1) On completion of a student's qualification, LJMU will award the degree.

2) Beaconhouse International College will arrange a convocation ceremony for all graduating students upon successful completion of their degree programme.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is usually via a combination of exams and coursework, and sometimes by a portfolio of work, depending on the subject. A final year engineering project gives you the chance to work independently and contributes considerably to your final mark. Your tutors will give prompt and constructive feedback via our virtual learning environment, face-to-face or as written comments. This will help you to identify your strengths as well as the areas where you may need to put in more work.

Each Module of BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme is assessed using approximately 50% of the assessments via coursework submission, and 50% by examination. However, this percentage may vary for different modules.

To be eligible for the degree, you must:

  • Age 17+ by 30 November in the year of registration.
  • A Levels with minimum 112 UCAS points with a minimum grade C in Mathematics and one of the following subjects ((Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Further Maths, Engineering)
    or
BTEC Award (provided grade DMM or above is achieved) in an Engineering discipline with a distinction grade in the Further Mathematics unit.
    or
HSSC - Intermediate / Higher Secondary Certificate: entry to level 4 requires a 75% overall award mark; mathematics passed at 70% or above in final year, passes in physics and chemistry.
    or
any other relevant high school qualifications
  • Provide proof of competence in English and Mathematics by having UK GCSE/GCE ‘O’ level at grade C. Otherwise a test of proficiency may be required.
  • Each application will be considered on an individual basis, and the decision will be taken at the discretion of the Liverpool John Moores University.

Engineering Graduates go on to undertake further professional qualifications including;

  • Masters in Engineering (MEng) Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Masters in Engineering Management
BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronics Engineering is also accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the Engineering Council, UK for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as an Incorporated Engineer and partly meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Gaining professional status will be of considerable benefit to engineering graduates in their future career especially if they want to join a multinational company.

Electrical and electronic engineers are employed in almost every sector of economic activity including:

  • the utilities in power generation and distribution,
  • telecommunications, and water
  • all areas of manufacturing, including aerospace, automotive, electrical and electronic
  • equipment research and development technical services,
  • consultancies and government agencies
For BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering, specific employment sectors include project engineer leading and managing technical teams, product development engineer developing electrical/electronic products and systems, power systems engineer designing, managing and maintaining power distribution networks and process engineer developing and maintaining manufacturing processes.
